Support for Windows Embedded for Symantec Endpoint Protection

Resolution

As of version 14, you use the Embedded/VDI client for computers that run Windows Embedded. The Embedded/VDI client for Symantec Endpoint Protection 14 now uses virus and spyware definitions in the cloud.

Symantec Endpoint Protection offers additional enhancements for devices that run Windows Embedded operating systems, including:

  • A reduced-size client installation package
  • Reduced-size definitions for Windows
  • Support for Windows Embedded write filters
  • The ability to search for information about Windows Embedded devices
  • Reports on Windows Embedded devices

Write filters

The Enhanced Write Filter (EWF) and the Unified Write Filter (UWF) are not supported. The recommended write filter is the File Based Write Filter (FBWF) along with the Registry Filter. The installer automatically creates file and registry exclusions for FBWF. See Automatic FBWF file and registry exclusions for SEP 12.1.6 for Windows Embedded for more information.

Installation is blocked if unsupported write filters are installed and enabled, if FBWF is installed without the Registry Filter, or if FBWF is enabled on the system drive and installation path. In this case, resolve the issue in the message box, and then attempt installation again. You may need to restart the device after you make these changes.
